“…a soft tongue will break a bone.”
As I read this verse in Proverbs, I thought to the childhood rhyme, “Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me.” Really? Will words really never hurt me? It seems to me that words are as hurtful as anything.
In fact, Proverbs itself has a lot to say about words. Here’s just a small sampling:
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” Proverbs 18:21
“A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.” Proverbs 15:4
“A fool’s mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his soul.” Proverbs 18:7
15Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
